Bull King Husband is adapted from one of the four Classical Chinese Novels: Journey to the West , combined with elements of time travel. Furthermore, we incorporate the drag queen culture into it and change the sexual orientation and gender expression of the main characters in the original plot. These efforts turned the first traditional New Year gay film, themed the Year of Bull, into reality.

The cultural background of the Chinese zodiac animals

The Year of 2021 is the Year of Bull. In the Chinese culture, every year is represented by a zodiac animal. There are twelve zodiac animals, which represent twelve Earthly Branches and twelve main personalities. We use Bull as the prototype to characterize the role of Bull Demon King , and adapt his story in Journey to the West. His battle with Monkey King becomes a battle in bed. We redesign all the costumes, props and scenes using gay elements. For instance, the "As-You-Will Gold-Banded Cudgel" used by Monkey King in the original plot can become needle-sized, which makes it easier to store in the ear. When Monkey King needs a weapon to fight against his enemies, the needle-sized "As-You-Will Gold-Banded Cudgel" can transform into a thick, big and long iron stick. "As-You-Will Gold-Banded Cudgel" is very powerful. Even gods are not able to beat it down easily. This is the primary example in the traditional Chinese literature of using an iron stick as a Dharma instrument. However, in our film, we replace the diamond-hard "As-You-Will Gold-Banded Cudgel" with the flexible "As-You-Will double dildo". Its hardness changes along with Monkey King’s intensity of sexual desires. It is used as the weapon for the battle in bed with Bull Demon King.
